Job Openings plateaued, and most people remained in jobs in December

In December, job openings rates remained the same across 84% of the States, only decreasing in 4 states and increasing in 3 states. The rate of people leaving their jobs decreased in 9 states and increased only in one state, Georgia.

Jobs created by start-ups increased following the pandemic recession

Within the U.S., most new jobs after the pandemic recession occurred due to the creation of start-ups. Without start-ups, there is generally no net employment growth because existing businesses generally maintain their workforce numbers rather than create new jobs. Net employment growth across the U.S. increased solely due to new business start-ups.

Comparably, start-ups in 2023 employ less people compared to 1988

Even though start-ups led to the most net employment growth across the U.S., in 1988, the average start-up employed seven workers, while start-ups created in 2023 employed 3.5 workers. Compared to previous years, with most start-ups in the U.S. adopting the "lean start-up" model, start-ups may need fewer workers during early development.

Employment up in 61 metro areas at the end of 2023

Within city centers, 61 areas found employment to increase by the end of December 2023. The most significant gains in employment happened in Charleston, South Carolina, at 6%, and Bloomington, Indiana, at 4.5%.

A recent report indicates that major accounting and auditing firms, including EY and Deloitte, are reevaluating staff workloads and quietly reducing their workforce, particularly those with limited client engagements.

This move comes in response to a decline in client demand, prompting the firms to scrutinize employee productivity and time spent with clients.

Over the past year, hundreds of jobs have been cut across the Big Four firms as they adjust to changing market conditions and seek to optimize their operations.

Controversy: Can Your Boss Make You Attend a Meeting Outside Work Hours?

Gaining a deep understanding the problems that customers face is how you build products that provide value and grow. It all starts with a conversation. You have to let go of your assumptions so you can listen with an open mind and understand what’s actually important to them. That way you can build something that makes their life better. Something they actually want to buy.

Where do you draw the line between work-life balance? A recent altercation between a Gen Z worker and their employer has ignited a fervent online discussion. When the employee prioritized a gym class over an early morning meeting, it raised questions about work-life balance and employer expectations.

'Demoted' podcast hosts Natalie Marie and Ross Pomerantz weighed in on the debate, sparking further controversy.

“You just started this job. I don’t give a flying s— about your workout class. Also, an 8 a.m. workout class is too late. Work out at six, maybe seven.”

While some argue for the sanctity of personal time, others emphasize the demands of professional responsibility. Explore the nuances of this debate in our featured article.
